So ladies and gentlemen. This is the end of Kenya cup. The boys have struggled long and harder. Some longer, and harder, than others (keep your minds out of the gutter people).
This means that it is time for the awards. So here they are:
Top Points Scorer
At the beginning of the season an injury took away, a player we thought was, our key kicker. One man George Mutuku was eager to prove that theory wrong as his solid kicking through the posts helped machine get those crucial two or three points more times in the season than we could thank him for. Here’s to our top point scorer.
Top Try Scorer
It is often said that a captain needs to lead from the front. Well that is exactly what eighth man and captain Cedric Odera did the whole of this season. When the team desperately needed that try to get ahead he was more than willing to pick the ball from the back of the scrum and leave the flankers for dead as he grounded the tries that saw the team through to the end of a season to remember.
Player Of The Season
This season has been long and machine has had to call on some players to do more that they are required to do. For this particular player even amidst being struck by tragedy mid season he found a way to rise to the occasion time and time again. Scoring, passing, tackling and playing whatever position needed. We give this one to Evans Musili. Who is he you ask? Well most of you know him as Toi.
Try Of The Season
Machine v KCB early in the second half. Machine desperately needs the points to get back to fighting for the game. deep in the KCB half the ref gives a penalty. Before Cedric Odera and George Mutuku can make a decision, and while the KCB players are still bitching at the ref for some thing or the other Toi has scratched and taken off. He casually side stepped the full back and calmly grounded the ballfor a cetntre post try.
Rookie of The Season
Looking at the big number five it is hard to imagine that this is his first season in Mean Machine. The ball carrier and big tackler has spent the season bent over double. Doing the work that no one else wants to do. Many players have fallen to this man’s shoulder. What more need we say, you know who we are talking about one man Kelvin Gacheru.
Most Promising Players
You know you have a secure future when there is a tie for most promising player. These two guys have shown amazing growth during the last season. What’s the clincher though is they have potential to do so, so much more. Don’t act surprised when they tie for player of the season next season. Here’s to Dallo Chituyi and Mike Kaggwa
Beast Of The Season
Who remembers this guy’s 60M run against (insert Kenya cup side here)? There is not a single game that Ambwere Moses has played. Where he hasn’t terrorised the opponents. In fact against Nakuru at home when he played in 2nd team the Nakuru first team was so traumatised to see him running on 2nd team that they couldn’t fathom how he was on 2nd team. They then proceeded to fold, quickly to the first team. So lets give it to the beast, the madman. Say it with me now, AAAAAAAAMBWEREEE.
Carpenter of The Season
Mean Machine have dished out several sit downs this season. In fact it can be said that it is dangerous to try and tackle anyone in that blue jersey. Some stools however are more spectacular than anything. The most spectacular of all though was against Nondies. In particular KiokIo on Odipo. Odipo rushed Kioko and Kioko was at a standstill positon. In the stands we all cringed waiting for Kioko to be smashed. There was a loud explosion and Kioko was on the ground… wait I got that wrong. Odipo after all his rushing, was left for dead, fallen to the shoulder of our mighty number 3.
Stool Of the Season
Sometimes you get as much as you give. This is what our two centers have come to learn this season. To being with Ian Were Odipo, enraged by the stool in the above category, went on a rampage. Poor Were was unfortunate to be knocked down, straight to the ground, He did one turn, two, three and should have ended with a curtsy but he didn’t.
The other one in this category is our very own vice captain Joel “Jay” Maingi. It has often been said that backrows should cross cover and centers shouldn’t. Maingi found out why the hard way. Crossing the pitch in a desperate attempt to cover an overlap (we noted the effort Maingi, you get an A for that) Maingi found Mwamba’s number 8 more than willing to help Maingi in his attempt to cross cover. It is in this generous mood that the Number 8 gave Maingi some extra momentum. Which left our dear Vice Captain flat on his back, wondering why he even tried to begin with.
All in all it was a good season for the team, filled with bittersweet moments for all of us. Don’t let the 9th place finish fool you machine is here, and here to stay.
Always Eschuma, Always Absolute.
Keep it Macho Blue.
