About Josephine Were Josephine has never played rugby in her life. However, had she played, she likes to think that she might have been the Machine hooker. She has supported Mean Machine since the mid nineties when her brother Mike played for the club. She stayed on with the club even after his departure as she studied at the University of Nairobi’s Parklands Law Campus. Josephine now works as a legal consultant and as a sports event planner with Pacific Sports Limited. She is the current tournament director for the Rugby Super Series, a tournament of the KRFU, as well as the team manager for the Kenya women’s rugby team. Josephine looks forward to spawning an entire Machine back row in the next few years. Write to Josephine on kajose@meanmachine.co.ke

    We’ve been having it!
photos by Mentalacrobatics and Harvest Tone This past weekend, we finally witnessed the first Mean Machine Kenya Cup game win of the season. I thought we had lost the will to fight and win. But after watching this game against Nakuru, I realised that it was always there and perhaps just needed to be channelled. Thanks to Benja and the rest of the technical team, the boys finally proved that weR...

    Captain’s Mbuzi
As day turned to night, the pace changed from hard runs and quick steps, to the intoxicating aroma of the Captain’s Mbuzi as it slowly roasted on the evening fire. The fire represented for me, that eternal flame that burns in the heart of a true Machine; that warmth deep down in our souls every time we hear the name Mean Machine; that intensity that Mean Machine brings to the heart of Kenyan...

Mean Machine RFC, knowing on which side their bread is buttered, gave The Machine Old Boys the shirts off their backs; literally. And thus the game began, the MOB in the great blue and white, the boys looking like ruffians… Rombo V. Kopo Generations came together, the inspiring and the inspired…. FRU together again.. Charlie jumped with glee… Unfortunately, Johnny Woo’s ...

    Great Expectations
The 2009 rugby season is just about to start and I have great expectations for local rugby this year, which I am sure are shared by many at Mean Machine. I would like to see a bigger and better Rugby Super Series tournament this year. I would like to see Uganda participate this year and bring the number of participating teams up to eight from six. The rivalry between Kenya and Uganda on the pitch...

    Busted!
We must humble ourselves and admit that Mean Machine was not always that embodiment of discipline and fraternity that we often prided ourselves on. We weren’t always model citizens. Sometimes even we acted out our frustrations; engaging in undesirable behaviour. This photo was taken by David Kihima and the caption read: “Five Mean Machine Players seen raining kicks and blows on a Nondies p...

    The Awkward Squad
This photo was taken at Lenana School Nairobi; previously Duke of York School, in front of Delamere House. While strictly speaking not an M File, I feel that this time and place in history resonates well with our Founding Era. DRIVING THE MACHINE
While in residential camp, the 1976 University of Nairobi rugby squad for the East Africa University games watched the 1974 Hollywood blockbuster “The Longest Yard”. Starring Burt Reynolds as Paul Crewe, the movie was about a convicted American Football player who despite having been asked by the wardens to throw the game in return for an early release, trained and led his fellow convicts towa...

    SHEEBEEN
We live in catastrophic times. Drinking holes where we, the more mature sort, once found refuge from complexities of life; where we reclined to the sanctity of nice cold kenyan beer, have now been infested by snotty adolescents and transformed into second-rate taverns, which are charged with these invaders’ blatant pubescent tendencies that are too much too bare even for those of us going t...

    RED TOUCH RUGBY
Nondies hosted their annual touch rugby tournament on Saturday, 13th September, 2008. The MOB was represented by Madi Jimba Yahya, Lennox Ongus, Hilary Itela, Antony Onyango, Lawrence Omondi and Antony Gacanja. It was smooth sailing for the MOB until they met Avandu Chinkororo Strong RFC, the MOB chairman’s team of choice. Confident that her boys would make it to the finals without her, the Ch...
